What Does A Dark New Moon Have In Store For Shady Pines?

Starry, Starry Night

If there’s one thing you need to know about Shady Pines is that our quaint Southern town is charming both day and night. You see we’re not a big ‘ole city with all those bright lights. So when the sun goes down we look up. Stars blanket the sky. You feel like they go on forever.

It’s a downright sight to behold.

One person who fancies himself quite the expert on stars and such is none other than our mayor, Beauregrd P. Fibbs. He’s always tracking the next time he wants us to notice something special.

“Would you lookey there,” says Mayor Fibbs. On Tuesday, October 21st there’s going to be a New Moon. I love that!”

The Dark Moon

Well, you should know dear readers, this New Moon will not be big and bright like you might imagine. That’s because it will be located  between the earth and the sun with the sunlit side facing away from Earth, making it invisible. That’s why it’s known as the dark moon.

As you can see by this picture, we’re barely going to be able to make out its outline.

So why is Fibbs getting this excited?

More To See

“Oh I know. Most people think the Harvest Moon or The Pink Moon are a big deal. But this moon is unique. For one thing, because the sky won’t have moon light we’ll be able to see other stuff.

It turns out this new moon is timed with the peak of the Orion meteor shower. How cool is that? Now that’s something to look forward to seeing!”

But Fibbs has more to tell us about this incredible moon.

“And here’s another thing you need to know,” says Beauregard. “The people I listen to who study thiese things say the New Moon this month means we’re entering a time of endings and new beginnings.”

Now isn’t that interesting? You may remember that Edna Sanders is beginning her new Kindness Campaign for school children. We recently told you about it.

The Kindness Project Begins

Edna is wrapping one of her award-winning chocolate chip cookies along with a positive note and tying them up with plastic and a ribbon. The Shady Pines Elementary school kids will get these little positive gifts when they do projects at the community center each Friday. Then they’ll take them home and put them on the refrigerator to make sure the message “Sticks.”

Is there a project or a hobby you’ve been putting off that you’d like to start?

Endings

As for endings we might want to look to Edna and Harold’s four-legged children. Boomer and Halley are nearly always bickering and tearing after each other.

Maybe they could look for the good in one another once in awhile. What’s that you say? There’s very little chance that’s going to happen.

Well, we can always hope while encouraging our loved ones to make better choices.

In the meantime, follow our mayor’s lead and look up on the night of October 21st. Let us know what you think of the Dark Moon and the endings and beginnings it brings your way!
