Shady Pines Neighbors Help Hurricane Relief

Shady Pines Neighbors Help Hurricane Relief

The good folks in the small Southern town of Shady Pines breathe a sigh of relief. They were not in the path of the monster hurricane that barreled into North and South Carolina. Now they want to help those who were affected. At a time like this, people need to reach out to each other.

The destruction that Hurricane Florence unleashed is unreal. The pictures coming in show scenes of battered houses, downed trees, washed out highways and roads. People and vehicles can be seen wading and driving through through high water. In neighborhood after neighborhood there are long lines as people wait for gas and food.

The Shady Pines Gazette newspaper editor, Zulah Talmadge, and Scoop, the Cub Reporter, have been tracking all the news. Zulah looks through piles of reports.

Hundreds of thousands of people don’t have electricity because it was knocked out by the storm. Power trucks from other states head to the area to help out. But many of the roads are washed out. How will they get there?

“Scoop, do you have the latest on what roads are open and which ones are closed?”

The young reporter with the tousled red hair finishes a phone call and looks up. “The latest information is supposed to be updated in about an hour, Ms. Talmadge. The flood waters from the major rivers are still rising. Crews are out trying to see which highways are safe.”

Zulah nods. “I’ve been hearing that, too.”

Scoop is excited about one thing. “I’ve been talking with some of my buddies and they’re getting supplies together. They know some parents who drive pickup trucks. Moms and dads are ready to start deliveries as soon as the roads are better.”

Zulah has an idea. “I’ll call Rita Malena over at the Community Center. I want to see how her hurricane relief efforts are coming along. She was going to turn the place into a drop off center for donations. In fact, Scoop, why don’t you grab your camera and let’s go over there and see for ourselves.”

Scoop is once step ahead of her. “I had a feeling you might say that. So I’ve got my reporter’s notebook, am grabbing my gear, and I’m ready to roll.”

Scoop and Zulah throw everything into their news vehicle and take off. Zulah decides to call Rita anyway and let her know they’ll be there soon.

“Hi Rita, it’s Zulah. How are things going? We’re heading your way.”

Rita Malena is the Director of the Shady Pines Community Center and she is a busy woman this morning trying to direct traffic. People are coming by with all sorts of donations, and volunteers are asking what goes where.

“Hi Zulah. It’s humming over here. People are dropping off bottled water, can goods, baby food, diapers, clothing, toothpaste and tooth brushes, shampoo, you-name-it. Our neighbors are so generous. They’re bringing in all the items people need in a time like this. They know a lot of folks can’t get to a store. In fact, without power, a lot of stores can’t open!”

As Rita is talking, volunteers separate out all of the different kinds of donations into big boxes. The activity at the Community Center is non stop. Helping one another and working together is what makes the town of Shady Pines such a special place.

If you would like to follow their lead and help out with the Hurricane Florence Relief efforts go HERE.

Real life relief agencies are hard at work and donations will be needed for weeks and months to come.

Anything you can do will be much appreciated for those whose lives have been upended by this massive storm event.

Not Just Any Interview!

Not Just Any Interview!

Hi everyone. Scoop, the cub reporter, here with Breaking News.

Well, Ms. Talmadge has really gone and done it this time. I can’t believe she did it. Zulah is going to do an interview with two, real-life people. How many cartoon characters do you know who could do that? Not many, that’s for sure.

This is SO exciting. The author and illustrator of the national award-winning book series, Boomer and Halley, are talking to the Shady Pines Gazette editor, Zulah Talmadge. I can’ wait to hear what Mary Jane McKittrick and Bob Ostrom have to say.

Zulah has been trying to land this interview for a long time. How long? Let’s see. I think ever since the first Boomer and Halley book about the Scavenger Hunt came out. Now there are three in print and more in the works from what I hear. isn’t that great? This has really made Shady Pines Story town famous in this neck of the world.

OK. I can’t stand it any longer. I want to hear what they say to Zulah. Want to join me? Well come on! To read the Interview GO HERE.

Civility on Display – A First-Ever Tour

Hi Everyone,

This just in. Now you get to see the town where civility lives. Our mail carrier, Kimberly Dunworthy, is taking folks on a tour of our town. you might not think that’s such a big deal, but it’s the first time she’s done this. I’m hearing that she might make it an ongoing opportunity for visitors to enjoy. Of course, the more our town grows, the more there is to see.

Kim is a good one to take you around since her mail route has her interacting with our neighbors every day. She grew up in nearby River City and says that coming to Shady Pines Story Town was quite an adjustment. Things can get a little wacky around here at times. But now she has plenty of stories of her own to share.

See, that’s what we do here. We tell stories to help inspire kids to be better people. We also like to have a lot of fun.

Hey, what do say we catch up with tour and hear what Kim has to say? Let’s go! HERE

A parenting note from Shady Pines Founder, Mary Jane McKittrick

Hey Everyone,

Scoop here. Something’s always going on in Shady Pines Story Town. That’s why it’s so cool to be a reporter for The Shady Pines Gazette. Every day I get to find out stuff I didn’t know before.

Today, my editor Zulah Talmadge, has me talking to Mary Jane McKittrick. She’s the author of the award-winning series of books called, Boomer and Halley. They are the dog and cat who got lost and wound up in our town a while back. We all know that the stories Mary Jane tells about the Sanders family are a real hoot. Harold and Edna Sanders had no idea what they were getting into when they adopted those two critters.

Well, now Mary Jane has a fun take on parenting she wants to share. It’s something she learned when she was just a kid. Follow me. We’re going to find out what she has to say right now! Go HERE

We Have a Winner!

We Have a Winner!

Hi again. Scoop here. This just in. Mayor Beauregard P. Fibbs is making news. He has selected a winner for our Get Un-Plugged contest. The person who won is going to be really happy ’cause they’re getting a big prize.

Let me tell you, we had a whole lot of folks get in on this one. A bunch of ideas came into The Shady Pines Gazette office, let me tell you. Seems just about everybody in town feels they’re spending too much time on a device of some kind. Putting limits on using cell phones, tablets, TV’s, computers and the like, is tough.

Do you and your family struggle with this, too? I bet you do. We heard from people old and young, and many had the same concerns.

Why, this contest even made me pay attention to how many screens I stare at each day. You know what? I surprised myself when I paid attention and added up the number of hours. I don’t even want to tell you the final total. It’s kinda scary.

But, enough about that. Bet you can’t wait to find out who won, right? Let’s get right to it. Go HERE now!
