Foods To Fight Sickness from Edna Sanders

Between Flu Season and now this scary Coronavirus that’s spreading like crazy, everyone in Shady Pines Story Town is worried about getting sick. So, in this edition of Edna’s Kitchen for The Shady Pines Way Blog, I’m going to talk about what to eat and drink to help fight off those nasty bugs.

Since I’m always on the lookout for new ideas when it comes to food, and I found some information on this very topic from health expert, Gabrielle Frank.  She’s the Health and Senior Editor for the TODAY Show online. She tells us about 17 foods you should be eating and liquids you should be drinking, to help keep your bodies strong and increase your ability to stay well.

So, here we go!

Ginger Tea – Studies show when it comes to treating a common cold, ginger is one of the best foods around. It seems there’s something in the makeup of the ginger root that gives it a powerful ability to fight off colds and flu. Did you know that the ginger root can play a big role in revving up your system in a good way? Think of ginger as a superhero that can increase your body’s germ fighting ability. You can always add a little honey to your ginger tea to make it taste sweeter.

Oranges – You like oranges and orange juice, don’t you? Here’s some good news. Oranges are packed with vitamin C. That’s the important vitamin your body needs when you’re not feeling well. This delicious fruit is one of the best things you can eat to prevent the common cold. Remember to eat oranges or take vitamin C tablets when you think you might be exposed to places where there are lots of people who might be sick, like at school. Also, if you live or visit a location with really cold weather where you might catch a cold, taking vitamin C can help if you do get a cold. With vitamin C on your side, you won’t feel as bad and your cold won’t last as long as it would if you didn’t take it.

Water – This is pretty simple, huh? When you’re feeling sick, good ‘ole H2O can be one of the most helpful drinks to sip. Most experts recommend drinking eight glasses of water every day. That might seem like a lot, but it’s the best way to keep yourself fully hydrated. Why is that important? Well, because we lose fluids when we’re sick. By drinking lots of water we flush out all the bad stuff in our bodies and keep everything hunky-dory, as my mother used to say.

Blueberries –  These are a double header of goodness. Not only are they tasty and nutritious, but they are considered a powerhouse when it comes to jump starting your energy. Blueberries pack vitamin C and they also come equipped with Vitamin K. These wonderful, little blue berries are filled with something called, an-ti-ox-i-dants. Those powerful ingredient help treat and prevent colds and flu. You can eat blueberries right along with other fruit in a bowl, top your cereal with them, or bake them up in a blueberry muffin. However you like to eat blueberries is fine, just remember to make them part of your diet this flu season.

There are a lot more suggestions than I have time to go into here. But if you’re interested in seeing the whole list of foods and drinks, I am going to give you that chance. For more on Gabrielle Franks immunity boosting foods for you and your family just GO HERE.

Who SAW This in Edna’s Kitchen?

Who SAW This in Edna’s Kitchen?

I’m telling you, there’s nothing like the power of appreciation. Hi there. I’m Edna Sanders and I’ve just finished up another batch of my delicious chocolate chip cookies here in what everybody calls Edna’s Kitchen. I don’t know if you realize it, but my cutting board sure gets a lot of attention. Folks who visit my kitchen seem to have something to say when they notice it. What in the world is so special about a cutting board, you ask? Well, normally, not much. I mean, you generally turn to these handy, flat, boards to chop up vegetables and other ingredients for cooking. But I have to admit, this one is a little different than what you’re used to seeing.

Here, take a look. Yeah, it’s handmade from a really nice piece of wood. No, you’re exactly right. It’s not your run-of-the-mill type of kitchen item.

The shape of the darn thing is what gets people talking. It looks like a big saw! Yes, you heard that correctly. My cutting board looks like the tool that carpenters use to saw a piece of wood in half. And, that’s what it’s supposed to look like. My husband, Harold, made it for me down at his store. You know, the Nuts ‘N Bolts hardware store on Main Street. He modeled it after the sign in his store that says Soda. Why on earth would he do such a thing? Settle down, now. It was an anniversary gift. Well, yes, I was a bit taken aback when I first opened the package. To be honest I wasn’t sure how to react.

Here’s the thing. Harold is a sentimental sweetie, even though he won’t admit it to the guys. So, when he saw me looking at my cutting board saw for the first time, he was a bit shocked at the awkward silence. Next, he noticed my look of utter confusion. Worse yet, for him, I still wasn’t saying anything. Anyone who knows me has rarely seen me unable to speak. Harold will tell you that.

There was only one thing he could do. He just took over. Harold looked at all our friends and family who had gathered together. Then, he told them the reason he had made this gift for me.

“I can see, Edna, you’re confused by the gift I made for you to mark this special occasion. I can tell because you are rarely at a loss for words.”

“Harold, really.”

“So, here’s the deal. Edna, everyone in town knows I think you’re the prettiest, kindest, most wonderful person I know. I love you to pieces. But what they may not know is that I fell in love with you the minute I SAW you.”

“Oh, Harold.”

“Even if my gift is a little bit corny, I wanted you to know the story behind this cutting board. I really do appreciate everything you do for me, for our four-legged kids, Boomer and Halley, and for the good people of Shady Pines. I love you so much.”

Before you knew it, we’re all clapping and wiping a tear from our eyes. He’s something, my Harold.

And that is the reason why I display this unusual object with pride. It’s my reminder that you should always appreciate the kind gestures of others. And, even when you don’t fully understand the gift in front of you, know there is value in the generosity it represents. That’s what we should all celebrate and treasure whenever we can.

Showing appreciation for someone is The Shady Pines Way!

A World of Kindness in Shady Pines

A World of Kindness in Shady Pines

Breaking NewsWow! This is so great. I’m Scoop, the Cub Reporter with The Shady Pines Gazette News. Did you hear? Wednesday, November 13th is World Kindess Day. This is a really big deal y’all. It’s gonna be my lead story.

Here in Shady Pines Story Town we take pride in promoting kindness and caring. It’s really the thing we’re known for in this neck of the woods. I guess you could say it sorta put us on the map. Oh sure there are other small Southern towns, but we make it a point to make sure everyone who lives here, or visits, knows they are important and valued.

So, here’s what you need to know about World Kindness Day. It started back in 1998. The goal was to promote kindness all over the place like the United States or course, but also Canada, Japan, Australia and everywhere else you can imagine.

The folks who started this movement had in mind that people would come together and “highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.” Isn’t that cool?

Let’s face it. The world has got a lot of problems right now like violence and war, poverty and sickness, pollution and political divides. There are plenty of questions about how to fix that stuff. But what if we all try to be kinder to one another and show we care how someone else is feeling? Who knows where that could lead?

What if, for just one day, we looked at everything we do and say through the lens of caring? What if, for just 24 hours, we made choices that were kinder to the planet, to our communities and, yes, to our neighbors?

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to go out and report on what people are doing this 2019 World Kindness Day. I’ll be back with an update later. But in the meantime, what do you think you could do to make someone else feel a little better because they know you care?

A Loving Gesture for Valentine’s Day

EDNA’S KITCHEN STORIES                                                    It’s me, Edna Sanders. Welcome to Edna’s Kitchen. In honor of Valentine’s Day I want to tell you about the time my wonderful husband, Harold, did something to demonstrate his love for me. As a result of his efforts, my kitchen blender has become famous in our small Southern town of Shady Pines.  You see, my blender, Gertie, is always blowing her top. Maybe you’ve heard about this problem? No matter where I go in town, people like to tease me. They’ll say things like: “Hey Edna, I hear NASA is tracking that blender of yours across several galaxies.” “Chop, chop, Edna. That blender of yours is about to blow!” “Edna, has the Ford Motor Company called you yet about your blender? I hear they’re looking for ways to rev up the engines in their new cars!” Anyway, you get the drift. My blender has become a joke with lot of punch lines. And, I haven’t even made punch in it yet! So, I want to let you in on the secret behind my super-duper kitchen device. My dear husband, Harold, knows how I like to experiment with all sorts of new recipes. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in what I’m doing that I lose track of time. Oh, that’s another good story. I’ll tell you that one later. So, there I am stirring and adding a pinch of this and that, and I don’t realize how late it’s getting. Harold comes home from work thinking that I’m making dinner. But I was really making appetizers for a get-together the next day at the Community Center where I volunteer. Our dog, Boomerang was lying on the floor under the kitchen table, and our cat, Halley’s Comet, was snoozing on here window seat. They like to keep me company when I cook. “Hi Honey. What’s for dinner?” “Oh, Harold. You startled me.” “Sorry. Guess you couldn’t hear me over that noisy blender of yours.” “Be kind to Gertie. She may be getting on in years, but she can still get the job done.” “Why don’t you let me take that thing and give it a tune-up?” “Well, I will be busy at the Center tomorrow afternoon. I guess that’ll be all right.” “Sure. And here’s the best news. Once the ‘ole gal is back to running full force, you’ll be able to make more recipes in less time.” You know Harold’s intentions are well meaning. He likes to tinker with things down at his store. When you own Nuts ‘N Bolts hardware, that’s what you do. He left for work the next morning with Gertie tucked under one arm. I was a little anxious, but what can you say? Harold returned home that evening and proudly placed Gertie back on the kitchen counter. “Edna, it’s time for a test drive.” “I’ll just pull a few ingredients together and…” “No, no. Let’s make your chicken soup that I like so much. With the vegetables and everything.” “Are you sure?” “Absolutely.” So, Harold helped me chop and dice and pour. Now, for the moment of truth. I turned Gertie on low. She hummed. Wow. But Harold wanted me to see what, “this baby can really do.” The last thing I remember was Harold’s hand cranking the dial to Full Speed. In a split second, Gertie blew her lid and launched. You heard me. That blender came unplugged and flew off the counter tossing the contents of tonight’s dinner all over the place. Some part of her must have hit me because I was down. I could hear Boomer barking and Halley howling. I still can’t remember how Harold caught Gertie and turned her off. Harold helped me up, Halley hopped over me, and Boomer licked my face. All the while my industrious husband was saying something about “turbo-charging the engine” of the blender. I mumbled, “Oh, for crying in the soup.” And that’s how the legend of Gertie, my blender, was born. Surprisingly, Gertie survived her frantic flight. And since that night, I have found ways to better control her speed and power. Harold was right. The new, and improved Gertie has cut down on the time it takes me to whip something up. I must tell you there are still times, when, well, we have our little mis-adventures. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that Gertie helps me create recipes for people to enjoy. Only, now, she’s able to do it in record time, due to Harold’s loving gesture. He was just trying to help make things easier for me. In Edna’s Kitchen kindness and caring are the best ingredients of all in the small Southern Town of Shady Pines!       *** Check out other fun activities this Valentine’s Day in our Pine Cone Corner Activity Packet HERE
